The Ultimate Virginia Yarn Crawl

My idea for The Ultimate Virginia Yarn Crawl came from a complaint my daughter made during a routine Saturday outing. She was groaning because I’d just announced that on the way to our next destination, I would like to make one more little stop. Obviously that stop was at a local yarn shop.

Visiting local yarn shops is one of my favorite things. They all have yarn, needles, and notions, sure, but every single shop has a different flavor. Regardless of what’s offered, I can always find something I didn’t know I needed at a local yarn shop.

My oldest daughter piped up from the back row of our minivan. “Haven’t we been to, like, every yarn shop already?”

Every single one? Clearly, I haven’t. However, challenge accepted!

With this in mind, I set off to make a list of all of the local yarn shops in Virginia and visit them all.

Unfortunately the Crawl hasn’t been completed as quickly as I’d hoped. I started right before COVID hit and shut down many shops, some permanently. I’m still plugging along, though! And I’m happy to have you join the journey.

Now more than ever, please contact your local yarn shop to see how you can support them. Most shops have reopened for in-person shopping. Shops that aren’t yet open are offering curbside pickup, virtual shopping, online ordering, and virtual classes!

Resources

The Save the Local Yarn Shop Facebook group, established by Sam Barsky in February 2020, supports yarn shops across the country and is an excellent resource. Due to this group, locating and shopping at local yarn shops is even easier! Furthermore, knitters and crocheters have been able to better understand challenges facing local yarn shops.

I often use Ravelry’s Road Trip LYS Finder to help find essential detours. Before leaving for a trip, I plug in the route and how far I’m willing to deviate from it. The Road Trip LYS Finder spits out a list of nearby shops!
