Needles in the Haymarket [Local Yarn Shop]

Needles in the Haymarket has moved to Gainesville, Virginia. This post reflects my experience at their Haymarket shop. The address and contact information at the end of the post have been updated.

🧶 This visit is part of the Ultimate Virginia Yarn Crawl.

Needles in the Haymarket is situated in the first level of a three-level brick building on Washington Street, a main thoroughfare of Haymarket, Virginia. Haymarket is a small town with lots of charm and Needles in the Haymarket only adds to it!

I’d describe the shop as quaint, cozy, and warm, though that is in direct contrast to the size. It’s huge!

Pictures can’t do it justice because in addition to being large, it’s full. Yarns of all types line the walls and shelves throughout. There’s a small communal workspace up front and another in back.

Yarn is organized by fiber, which makes it a bit easier to find what you’re looking for. Even so, there’s so much to choose from that I was unable to find my yarn of choice at first!

While searching, I found some old favorites, like Bamboo Bloom Handpaints by Universal Yarns. (It’s the yarn I just used for my Fairy Lights Cowl pattern!)

Knitted Wit yarns were available in a few sizes and weights, including these vibrant full-size skeins (Targhee Worsted) and multicolor minis (Double Bubble).

There’s also a clearance yarn section up front where you can find yarns 40% off of the ticketed price. They had some good selections, like these BFL Sock skeins by Shirsty Cat Designs.

There were several other options for visitors who don’t knit or crochet. There are also richly-colored roving braids for felting or spinning. The needle felting kit designs were particularly lovely!

Purchases and Sales

On this visit, I picked up 3 skeins of Adriafil Cupido yarn and another set of ChiaoGoo needles for two different projects I have in the works.

I was pleased to find that all yarn is on sale (20% off) on the third Saturday of the month because that’s when I happened to visit!

Needlepoint

Needles in the Haymarket has a very large section devoted to needlepoint. It’s not something I’m experienced in, but I’ve been to other shops that carry needlepoint supplies. Still, I’ve never seen a shop with so many hand-painted canvases or such an extensive thread wall!

Needles in the Haymarket gets my recommendation for its expansive collection, but also for its helpful staff. They were able to locate the yarn and needles I needed and really knew their stuff!
