Let’s Celebrate I Love Yarn Day 2021!

Just over a decade ago, the Craft Yarn Council designated the second Saturday in October I Love Yarn Day. It was established to encourage fiber folks to share their love of yarn. Set aside Saturday, October 9, 2021 to celebrate this fabulous new(ish) holiday!

Ways to Celebrate

Visit a Local Yarn Shop

I’m passionate about small businesses, especially local yarn shops, and I Love Yarn Day is the perfect excuse to visit one! Many local yarn shops celebrate I Love Yarn Day in their own way, usually with special events, sales, and workshops. What’s going on at your shop?

Ravelry also has an excellent roadtrip tool to help you find local yarn shops near your route on trips between two points.

Teach Someone to Knit or Crochet

Has someone been hinting that they’d love to learn your craft? Now’s your chance to teach them! Share your skills alongside your love of yarn.

Surprise a Friend with Yarn

Wouldn’t it be wonderful to start a tradition of gift-giving on I Love Yarn Day? I’m thinking it will be just like Christmas morning, but skeins piled high around the tree.

Start it off by sending some yarn to a fellow crafter! Don’t have any yarn-loving friends nearby? Join our Secret Santa Yarn Exchange!

Donate Yarn (or a Handmade Item)

Spread the joy of I Love Yarn Day with others by donating to those in need. Even a simple, quick hat can make a difference to someone who needs it.

Many charities accept handmade items. Some also accept yarn!

Whether it’s your headphones or your mailbox, wrapping a beloved item in knitted or crocheted yarn is a way to make it your own and publicly celebrate I Love Yarn Day.

Craft with Yarn

If you knit or crochet, it’s easy to forget that so many fun crafts can be made with yarn, too!

Share a Post on Social Media

Whether it’s a WIP, a FO, or simply your stash, images of yarn are sure to be celebrated on I Love Yarn Day! If you visited your local yarn shop, share a pic of your purchases, too.

When posting, use the hashtag #iloveyarnday when you post so that other yarnies can find you. You can also search for the hashtag on your favorite social media platform to find ideas for your next project and crafters near you.

Knit or Crochet in Public

Whip out that WIP on a park bench and go for it! I’m likely to be found knitting at soccer games on October Saturdays. Someone almost always asks what I’m working on and other knitters spot me from a mile away!
