Knitting Pattern

The Ladders & Bricks Hat Knitting Pattern doesn’t require any knowledge of stranded colorwork! The slipped stitch technique turns alternating rounds of two different colors into bricks and stripes.

Materials

Recommended Yarn:
40 yards of Bernat Softee Chunky in Dark Mauve
40 yards of Bernat Softee Chunky in Glowing Gold
(pictured yarn is a small-batch, hand-dyed wool)

Needles:
US #13/9.00 mm

Notions:
finishing needle
stitch marker (1)

Notes

Gauge:
10 sts x 14 rows = 4″ x 4″
in Stockinette stitch (on size 13 needles)

Sizing:
child: 20″ to 25″ circumference, about 7″ from brim to pom
adult: 20″ to 25″ circumference, about 8.5″ from brim to pom

Abbreviations

CC – contrasting color
CO – cast on
k – knit
k2tog – knit 2 stitches together; single right-leaning decrease
m – marker
MC – main color
p – purl
PM – place marker
sl – slip
ssk – slip 2 stitches knitwise, knit these 2 stitches together through back loops; single left-leaning decrease
st(s) – stitch(es)

Pattern

This cap is worked in the round from the brim up, using oversized needles.

Setup

CO 44 sts in MC. PM and join for working in the round, taking care not to twist.

Ribbed Brim

Work 10 rounds of 1×1 ribbing (*k1, p1*).

Body

With CC:
1 – *sl1, k3*
2 – *sl1, k3*

With MC:
3 – k all
4 – k all

Repeat these 4 rows until cap measures 6″/7.5″ (child/adult) from the cast-on edge or about 1″ shy of desired length.

Work rows 1 – 3 and begin decreasing to shape crown on round 4.

Crown Shaping

All rounds are worked in MC:
1 – *ssk, k2* [33 sts]
2 – k all
3 – *k1, k2tog* [22 sts]
4 – k all
5 – *k2tog* [11 sts]

Snip yarn and draw through remaining stitches.

Finishing

Create pompom in CC and secure to top.

Weave in ends. Block if desired.
