Materials

Recommended Yarn:
70-80 yards of Bernat Softee Chunky in Schoolyard
(pictured yarn is a small-batch, hand-dyed wool)

Needles:
US #13/9.0 mm

Notions:
finishing needle
stitch markers

Notes

Gauge:
10 sts x 14 rows = 4″ x 4″
in Stockinette stitch

Sizing:
child: 20″ to 25″ circumference, about 7″ from brim to pom
adult: 20″ to 25″ circumference, about 8.5″ from brim to pom

Abbreviations

CO – cast on
k – knit
k2tog – knit 2 stitches together; single right-leaning decrease
p – purl
PM – place marker
sl – slip
ssk – slip 2 stitches knitwise, knit these 2 stitches together through back loops; single left-leaning decrease

Pattern

This cap is worked in the round from the brim up, using oversized needles.

Pattern is written for variegated or single color yarn. If you plan to use two or more colors of yarn, change yarns every 4 rounds. (Do not count the CO as a round.)

Setup

CO 44 sts, PM, and join for working in the round, taking care not to twist.

Ribbed Brim

1 – *k2, p2* to end
Work this round 7 more times.

Body

1 and 2 – *sl1, k3*
3 and 4 – k all

Repeat these 4 rows until cap measures 6″/7.5″ (child/adult) from the cast-on edge or about 1″ shy of desired length.

Crown Shaping

1 – *sl1, k1, ssk* [33 sts]
2 – *sl1, k2tog* [22 sts]
3 – k all
4 – *k2tog* [11 sts]

Snip yarn, draw through remaining stitches, and secure.

Finishing

Create pompom and secure to top.

Weave in ends. Block if desired.
