The Sugar Baby Knitting Pattern is a quick and easy knit that has a bit of built-in stretch. This is an adorable knitted pumpkin hat, regardless of how you feel about the mellowcreme pumpkins that inspired it!

Materials

Yarn:
45 yards of Loops & Threads Impeccable in Pumpkin
15 yards of Loops & Threads Impeccable in Forest

Needles:
US #10/6.00 mm dpn (or long circulars, if using magic loop method)

Notions:
finishing needle
stitch markers (5)

Notes

Gauge:
16 sts and 23 rows = 4″ x 4″ in Stockinette stitch

Sizing:
one size (children’s)
20″ circumference with some stretch

Abbreviations

BO – bind off
CC – contrasting color
CO – cast on
k – knit
k2tog – knit 2 stitches together; single right-leaning decrease
m – marker
MC – main color
p – purl
PM – place marker
SSK – slip 2 stitches knitwise, knit these 2 stitches together through back loops; single left-leaning decrease
st(s) – stitch(es)

Pattern

The pumpkin is worked in the round from the flat bottom edge up to the green stem.

Setup

CO 65 sts with MC. Join in the round, taking care not to twist.

Work one setup round, placing markers:
*k6, p2, k5, PM*

Body

Work as follows until cap measures 5″ from cast-on:
*k6, p2, k5, slip m*

Crown Shaping

Add CC:
1 – *CC: k1; MC: k5, p2, k5, slip m*
2 – *CC: k1, k2tog; MC: k3, p2, k3; CC: ssk, slip m* [55 sts]
3 – *CC: k3; MC: k2, p2, k2; CC: k2, slip m*
4 – *CC: k1, k2tog, k2; MC: p2; CC: k2, ssk, slip m* [45 sts]

Working in CC only:
5 – *k9, slip m*
6 – *k1, k2tog, k4, ssk, slip m* [35 sts]
7 – *k7, slip m*
8 – *k1, k2tog, k2, ssk, slip m* [25 sts]
9 – *k5, slip m*
10 – *k1, k2tog, ssk, slip m* [15 sts]
11 – k all, removing stitch markers (except round marker)
12 – *k2tog* until last stitch, k1 [8 sts]
13 – *k2tog* [4 sts]

Work in i-cord for 5 rounds.

Snip yarn, leaving a long tail. Draw tail through remaining stitches and secure.

Finishing

Weave in ends and block lightly if desired.
