Section 11 – Pyramid Stitch

Directions for small (36″ x 40″) and large (48″ x 65″) afghans are provided as S (L).

Materials

Yarn:
100 (215) yards of worsted weight yarn
Pictured: Caron Simply Soft in Country Blue (Color A)

Abbreviations

k – knit
p – purl
st(s) – stitch(es)
St st – Stockinette stitch

Pattern

You will need yarn in Color A for this section.

All sections of the pattern are worked back and forth from the bottom up.

Pyramid Stitch

Pyramid Stitch is a simple and fun stitch that creates mind-bending geometric shapes from knits and purls. Beginners can tackle it, but it’s interesting enough to keep veteran knitters interested, too!

Pyramid Stitch is worked across multiples of 8+1 stitches and 16 rows.

Setup

Using Color A, work 2 rows St st.

Stitch Pattern

For small size (180 sts):

Row 1 – k6, p1 *k7, p1* to last 5 sts, k5
Row 2 and all even rows to 16 – k sts as they present
Row 3 – k6, p2 *k5, p3* to last 12 sts, k5 p2, k5
Row 5 – k6, p3 *k3, p5* to last 11 sts, k3, p3, k5
Row 7 – k6, p4 *k1, p7* to last 10 sts, k1, p4, k5
Row 9 – k10 *p1, k7* to last 10 sts, p1, k9
Row 11 – k9 *p3, k5* to last 11 sts, p3, k8
Row 13 – k8 *p5, k3* to last 12 sts, p5, k7
Row 15 – k7 *p7, k1* to last 5 sts, k5

Repeat these 16 rows until section measures 3.25″.

For large size (240 sts):

Row 1 – k4, p1 *k7, p1* to last 3 sts, k3
Row 2 and all even rows to 16 – k sts as they present
Row 3 – k4, p2 *k5, p3* to last 10 sts, k5, p2, k3

Row 5 – k4, p3 *k3, p5* to last 9 sts, k3, p3, k3
Row 7 – k4, p4 *k1, p7* to last 8 sts, k1, p4, k3
Row 9 – k8 *p1, k7* to last 8 sts, p1, k7

Row 11 – k7 *p3, k5* to last 9 sts, p3, k6
Row 13 – k6 *p5, k3* to last 10 sts, p5, k5
Row 15 – k5 *p7, k1* to last 3 sts, k3

Repeat these 16 rows until section measures 5.25″.
