Seed Stitch [Knitting Stitch]

Seed Stitch is a simple, classic stitch pattern. Knits and purls alternate across both rows and columns, creating tiny “seeds.” The result is a beautiful, textured fabric! It’s also completely reversible.

This is an incredibly versatile stitch. You can incorporate seed stitch panels on hats, mittens, socks, and headbands. It’s often used to create allover texture for dish cloths, towels, and other home goods.

In many places outside of the US, you’ll hear this stitch called Moss Stitch.

Abbreviations Used

k – knit
p – purl

Seed Stitch Pattern

When working an even number of stitches:

Row 1 – *k1, p1*

Repeat this row to complete the pattern.

When working an odd number of stitches:

Row 1 – *k1, p1* to the last st, k1

Repeat this row to complete the pattern.

Working in the Round

When working an even number of stitches in the round:

Round 1 – *k1, p1*
Round 2 – *p1, k1*

Repeat these two rounds to complete the pattern.

When working an odd number of stitches in the round:

Round 1 – *k1, p1* to last st, k1
Round 2 – *p1, k1* to last st, p1

Repeat these two rounds to complete the pattern.
