What’s in the Hobbii Lucky Bag?

Have you heard of the Hobbii Lucky Bag? I just ordered two and can’t wait to show you what’s in them!

Hobbii Lucky Bags are grab bags of yarn for a fixed price. You don’t know exactly what you’re going to get, but you know what kind of yarn it will be and the approximate weight of the bag. I was ready to tack a couple onto my most recent Hobbii order because I’ve always loved the yarn I’ve purchased from this company.

What is a Lucky Bag?

Lucky Bags are offered in a variety of options:

• acrylic yarn – $17 for 18 ounces
• cakes – $33 for 4
• cotton yarn – $27 for 20 skeins
• ribbon jumbo yarn – $34 for 8.8 ounces
• sock yarn – $35 for 2.2 pounds
• wool yarn – $34 for 18 ounces

Recently, Hobbii also launched a Christmas Lucky Bag! Weighing in at 21 ounces, this limited edition grab bag promises a mixed bag of blended Christmas yarns for $39.

The two Lucky Bags I purchased were both full of acrylic yarn. At that time, they were on sale for $14.40 each. I also received free shipping for meeting purchase minimums. (See 2022 Hobbii Advent Calendar for Knitters.)

Unboxing a Hobbii Lucky Bag

Spoiler alert? Since the contents are supposed to be random, it’s unlikely that you’d receive the exact same bags I did. It is, however, a possibility! Proceed with caution if you don’t like potential spoilers!

Between the two bags, I received 10 skeins of acrylic yarn. All of them were solid colorways from the same line.

I did a bit of research and discovered that this particular line of yarn, We Love Yarn Bulky Everyday Acrylic, was a limited edition yarn offered by Hobbii in 2021. Many other yarns in the We Love Yarn line are still available, but this one has been discontinued.

Each bag contained 5 skeins. The colorway names aren’t available on the website and weren’t listed on the packaging, so I’ve tried to basically describe each one. Each bag contained 2 skeins in vibrant red (color 21), 1 skein in chocolate brown (color 5), 1 skein in green-black (color 6), and 1 skein in nearly black (color 7).

These bullet skeins each contain 3.5 ounces/147 yards of 100% acrylic yarn.
A Lucky Bag of 5 skeins contains 17.5 ounces/735 yards.

Pros

I enjoy a surprise! I also like building my stash with versatile yarn.

This pricing is excellent for We Love Yarn, coming in at $2.88 per skein/$0.02 per yard for a very soft acrylic.

I was very pleased that the yarn is workable on US 10/10.5 needles, which is in my range of preference. I anticipate it will also work up quickly!

Cons

I like the colors I received, but I wish I hadn’t received them together. Take a look at this!

There are three different colors here, but originally, I thought there were only two!

These two colorways in particular were giving me a bit of trouble.

They’re so close that I didn’t notice until I’d unboxed the second Lucky Bag. Even then, it was so difficult to tell the difference, I thought it may be the lighting in the room playing tricks on my eyes! It wasn’t until I checked the labels that I could definitively say that nearly black and black-green were separate colorways. To even get the photos to show the difference, I had to use excessively harsh lighting.

I would have been furious if I’d knit a scarf only to discover it looked like the Washington Monument, with a color change halfway through!

Overall Verdict

The next time I’m purchasing yarn from Hobbii, I’ll definitely add another Lucky Bag to my cart.

It’s also important to note that I like to work from materials I already have, sort of like making dinner from whatever is left in the fridge. A purchase like this makes sense for me, but isn’t for everyone.
