Endless Summer Tote [Knitting Pattern]

I created the Endless Summer Tote to hold onto my favorite season. Sure, I’m lucky to live in a state where I can experience all four seasons distinctly, but I just can’t handle the cold. We’re heading south to escape the winter blues and I created this tote to take with me. It’s the perfect poolside bag!

Knitting Pattern

Constructed in four pieces, the Endless Summer Tote is made of vibrant, durable yarns. Two reversible body panel patterns (charts) are provided.

The double-knit construction makes sturdy enough to carry heavier items without much stretch, ensuring the strap is plush and doesn’t dig into your shoulder.

Sizes

Finished size:
12″ x 12″ bag body
22″ strap drop

Materials

Yarn:
2 skeins of Loops & Threads Impeccable Yarn in Aran (Color A)
1 skein each of Loops & Threads Impeccable Yarn in Blue Haze (Color B), Clear Blue (Color C), Brite Sky Blue (Color D), Cherry (Color E), Pumpkin (Color F), Gold (Color G), and Butterscotch (Color H)

Substitutions:
350 yards medium weight yarn in main color
70 yards medium weight yarn in each additional color (7)

Needles:
US #6/4.00 mm (24″ circular, plus DPN for the strap, if desired)

Notions:
finishing needle
stitch markers (optional, but helpful)

Notes

Gauge:
16 sts x 24 rows = 4″ x 4″
in double knit Stockinette stitch

Matching gauge is not essential for this project.

Skills Required

This pattern requires a familiarity with double knitting in two colors, reading charts, and seaming double knitting (horizontal edges to vertical edges).

Abbreviations

BO – bind off
CO – cast on
DK – double knit
k – knit

Customization

This pattern calls for several colors, but the colorwork can be created with only two.

Two reversible panels create the sides of this tote. Colorwork charts are provided for these panels. Customize your tote by choosing the panels that you prefer: Sunrise/Sunset, Summer Sun, or one of each.

The Pattern

This pattern is worked flat in four pieces: front, back, bottom, and strap/sides. These pieces are then seamed together to create the tote.

Body (Make 2: Front and Back)

CO 96 sts with Color A. Set up for double knitting by working one row across: *k1, p1*

Begin double knitting. Knit across the panel and back once in Stockinette stitch, completing a single DK row.

Begin the chart of your choice with Colors A and B.

Sunrise/Sunset

Sunrise/Sunset is a simple striped pattern that alternates colors as it progresses.

Repeat these 10 rows progressively. For example, the first time you work through the first chart, you will use Color A for the light squares and Color B for the dark squares. For the next 10 rows, change colors and work Color B for the light squares and Color C for the dark squares. Continue in this manner, changing colors every 10 rows.

Color changes occur every 10 rows as follows:
Rows 1 to 10 – Color A and Color B
Rows 11 to 20 – Color B and Color C
Rows 21 to 30 – Color C and Color D
Rows 31 to 40 – Color D and Color E
Rows 41 to 50 – Color E and Color F
Rows 51 to 60 – Color F and Color G
Rows 61 to 70 – Color G and Color H

With Color H, work across the panel and back in DK Stockinette stitch, completing a single DK row.

BO all sts.

Summer Sun

The Summer Sun chart spans 12 stitches over 10 rows. It is repeated 4 times across the body of the bag. You may wish to use stitch markers between repeats.

Color A is always used in this pattern. The contrasting color changes after every 10 rows as follows:
Rows 1 to 10 – Color B
Rows 11 to 20 – Color C
Rows 21 to 30 – Color D
Rows 31 to 40 – Color E
Rows 41 to 50 – Color F
Rows 51 to 60 – Color G
Rows 61 to 70 – Color H

With Color A, work across the work and back in DK Stockinette stitch, completing a single DK row.

BO all sts.

Bottom

CO 20 sts with Color A. Set up for double knitting by working one row across: *k1, p1*

Work in DK Stockinette stitch until work measures 12″ long (about 72 rows).

BO all sts.

Strap

CO 20 sts with Color A and set up for double knitting by working one row across: *k1, p1*

Work in DK Stockinette stitch until work measures 48″ long (about 290 rows) or to desired length.

[If customizing length of strap, remember to include 24″ for the sides of the bag.]

BO all sts.

Finishing

Block lightly before sewing, if desired.

Arrange pieces for assembly. Working from the center, sew bag bottom to side panels.

Next, sew the strap to the sides of the tote, taking care not to twist the strap as you work.

Weave in ends.
