Diving into Lion Brand Yarn’s Santa Sack

The Lion Brand Yarn Santa Sack is the perfect holiday gift for knitters, crocheters, and crafters. I bought myself one and couldn’t wait to see what was inside!

the Lion Brand Yarn Santa Sack, a grab bag full of yarn

Lion Brand Yarn Santa Sack

The Santa Sack by Lion Brand Yarn is a huge tote filled with yarn. The website promised it would contain 3 packs of yarn, each containing 3 skeins. Since it’s a grab bag (or as my kids call it, a blind bag), I had no idea which yarns or colorways would be in it!

I think that’s part of the fun!

The large, red bag is printed with cute sayings like “North Pole Approved” and “Packed by Elf 1878.” It is large, about 2 feet deep and nearly as wide, with a drawstring closure that makes it look just like Santa’s sack of toys when it’s cinched.

I think this sack will find a new life as a project bag for sweaters and blankets.

As promised, the Santa Sack contained three 3-packs of yarn, each wrapped individually.

#1 Oh Baby Organic Yarn

Colorway: Coral

The first yarn I pulled out of the sack was Oh Baby Organic yarn. These skeins were probably packed on top because they are the smallest and lightest.

A Star is Born: Oh Baby Organic yarn is made from 100% organic cotton. It’s fine, for use with size 3 knitting needles or a size E crochet hook, which is a bit finer than I usually work with. The yardage is just enough to make a few hats or dishcloths, but many folks on Ravelry have made lacy tank tops with less yarn than I received!

#2 Basic Stitch Yarn

Colorway: Nightfall

I got a good chuckle when I saw the name of Basic Stitch yarn! This 100% acrylic yarn is offered in a variety of colorways. The one I received was a blend of white, black, and greys.

Basic Stitch is a medium weight yarn that touts its anti-pilling qualities. It’s recommended for hard-wear items that need frequent washing, like clothing, but I see a cat bed in this yarn’s future!

#3 Mandala Tweed Stripes Yarn

Colorway: Shooting Star

Lion Brand Yarn saved the best for last. I found Mandala Tweed Stripes yarn at the very bottom of my Santa Sack. I love the look of the tweed stripes and the colorway is perfect for me. It’s a blend of red, greys, white, and black.

Cost and Value

The Lion Brand Yarn Santa Sack cost $19.99 plus shipping ($6.00) for a total of $25.99.

Oh Baby Organic yarn retails for $5.99 per skein ($17.97 total).
Basic Stitch yarn also retails for $5.99 per skein ($17.97 total).
Mandala Tweed Stripes yarn retails for $8.99 per skein ($26.97 total).

That’s a total of $62.91 in yarn! I didn’t even pay half of that.

Of course, this is only a savings if you will use yarn that you get. I’ve seen some folks post that they did not like the yarn they received. I liked all of mine! Even though I might not have purchased it myself, I’ll be able to put it to good use!

If they’re still available, you can find Santa Sacks on the Lion Brand Yarn website.

The Projects

With Mandala Tweed Stripes yarn, I made 3 scarves, each with a different stitch pattern. It was interesting to see how different stitch patterns affected the striping of the yarn! Which is your favorite?
