The Santa Claus Bottle Cozy Knitting Pattern is a gnome-inspired knit that adds a warm, whimsical touch to any mantel. This knitting pattern fits 12-ounce and 16-ounce bottles of craft soda or beer.

Materials

Yarn:
about 40 yd of Bernat Pipsqueak in Whitey White
about 60 yd of Impeccable Loops & Threads in Cherry
scrap yarn for the nose

Needles:
US #8/5.00 mm

Notions:
finishing needle
stitch markers

Other Supplies:
beer bottle

Notes

Gauge:
18 sts x 24 rows = 4″ x 4″ in Stockinette stitch

Sizing:
one size fits 12 oz. heritage, 12 oz. longneck, and 16 oz. longneck bottles

Abbreviations

BO – bind off
CO – cast on
k – knit
kfb – knit one into front and back of stitch; single knit increase
k2tog – knit 2 stitches together; single right-leaning decrease
M1 – make 1 stitch knitwise; single knit increase
p – purl
PM – place marker
ssk – slip 2 stitches knitwise, knit these 2 stitches together through the back loops; single left-leaning decrease
St st – Stockinette stitch
st(s) – stitch(es)

The Pattern

The pattern is worked in 4 pieces: body (cozy), beard, hat, and nose.

Body

First, work the body in the round with Cherry.

CO 36 sts. PM and join in the round, taking care not to twist.

Work 10 rounds as follows:
k1, p2, k2, p2, k22, p2, k2, p2, k1

Continue working in St st until work measures 6″ (approximately 36 rounds).

BO all sts and weave in ends.

Beard

Next, work the beard back and forth with Whitey White.

CO 21 sts, leaving a long tail.

Row 1 – k all
Row 2 – k2tog, k to last 2 sts, ssk [19 sts]

Repeat these last 2 rounds 8 times more [3 sts].

Next row – k2tog, k1 [2 sts]

Final row – k2tog, BO and draw through

Weave in end on beard tip only.

Nose

Next, work the nose in the round with scrap yarn in your choice of color. (I used some scrap white yarn and dyed it with a tea bag.)

CO 3 sts, leaving a long tail. Join in the round, taking care not to twist.

Rounds 1 and 2 – kfb all [12 sts]
Round 3 – k all
Rounds 4 and 5 – k2tog around [3 sts]

BO all sts. Pull tightly on the yarn tail to cinch and define the nose.

Hat

Lastly, work the hat in the round from the top down using both Whitey White and Cherry.

CO 3 sts with Whitey White, leaving a long tail. Join in the round, taking care not to twist.

Rounds 1 and 2 – kfb all [12 sts]
Rounds 3 to 6 – k all
Round 7 – k2tog around
Round 8 – k all

Pom pom complete! Change to Cherry for round 9.

Rounds 9 to 10 – k all
Round 11 – *k1, M1* [12 sts]
Rounds 12 to 14 – k all
Round 15 – *k2, M1* [18 sts]
Rounds 16 to 19 – k all
Round 20 – *k3, PM*

Increase as follows:
Round 1 – *k to m, M1*
Rounds 2 to 7 – k all

Repeat these rounds until you have 36 sts, ending with round 7.

Change to Whitey White and work 6 rounds even (k all).

BO all sts and weave in ends.

Assembly

With ribbing in back, center the beard on the front of the bottle cozy body.

First, using the long tail from cast-on, sew the edge of the beard to the edge of the body.

Next, center the nose on the beard and sew it in place with its tail.

Weave in any remaining ends.
