a brown beach bag is on its side in the sand, spilling sunscreen, sunglasses, and a towel

On our most recent trip to Walt Disney World, we stayed at Disney’s Yacht Club for the first time. It was a beautiful resort and had much more to offer than I expected. I whipped up this little beach tote for trips to the sand-bottomed pool.

Knitting Pattern

The Boardwalk Beach Bag Knitting Pattern is a speedy knit on large needles. The stretchy lace is easy to master and provides the stretch that enables it to hold your towel, swimsuit, sunscreen, sunglasses, and more!

To view our terms of use for all knitting and crochet patterns, see our Terms of Service.

Sizing

Finished tote body measures 11″ tall and 24″ around when not stretched. Strap is 30″ long.

Materials

Yarn:
160 yards of Lion Brand Wool Ease in Desert
OR
320 yards of Lily Sugar n Cream in Earth
(use two strands held together)

A Note About the Yarn

The yarn I used for this project was a small batch hand-dye. Because of that, it can’t be duplicated exactly, but you can use the pattern to approximate it.

If you’d like to dye your own yarn to match the original, you can use Jacquard acid dye in Olive for a similar result.

Needles:
US #13/9.00 mm dpn (or long circulars, if using magic loop method)

Notions:
finishing needle
stitch holder (or spare needle)
stitch markers

Notes

Gauge:
10 stitches and 13 rows = 4″ x 4″ in Stockinette stitch

Abbreviations

BO – bind off
CO – cast on
k – knit
kwise – knitwise
M1 – make one stitch knitwise; single stitch increase
p – purl
PM – place marker
RS – right side
st(s) – stitch(es)
WS – wrong side
yo – yarn over

Pattern

The tote is knit in the round from the bottom up, starting with a flat, round base and finishing with the strap.

Setup

CO 9 sts and join in the round, using care not to twist.

Setup round:
*k3, PM* to end

Base

These two rounds form the base:
1 – *k to 1 st before m, M1, k1, slip m*
2 – k all

Repeat these two rounds 13 times [48 sts].

Body

These six rounds form the body:
1, 2, 3 – p all
4 – k all
5 – *yo twice, k1* to end
6 – k all, dropping the yo from the previous round

Repeat these 6 rounds 4 times (5 times total).

Work rounds 1-3 once more.

Strap

The strap mirrors the tote body, but has less elasticity. It is worked back and forth.

Setup round: *BO 19 sts kwise, then k5* twice.

You now have 10 live stitches (2 sets of 5) across from each other. Place the first set of 5 on a stitch holder. Work with the last 5.

These 6 rows make up the strap:
1 – p all (RS)
2 – k all
3 – *yo twice, k1* to end
4 – p all, dropping the yo from the previous row
5 – p all
6 – k all

Repeat these 6 rows until the strap is the desired length (approximately 30″ without stretch).

Finishing

Graft the live stitches to those on the stitch holder.

Weave in ends.

Pack with pool essentials and go!
