Pokee & Ice Rolls in Panama City Beach, Florida

May 2022 Update:
I have been unable to access this shop’s website for some time. I reached out to the shop to determine if it had closed, but I have not yet heard back.
At this time, I am afraid that Pokee & Ice Rolls may be permanently closed. If you have any information, please contact me directly by clicking “Contact” at the top of the page.

We’ve made a few trips to Panama City Beach, Florida in the past few years. We always go in the winter months to visit my mother who began wintering down there after she retired.

I’m no fan of cold weather, either, and Florida is a beautiful place to escape from the temps January and February bring to Virginia. We love all of Florida, but on the panhandle we can watch the sun as it sets over the water. That may not seem too majestic, but to an east coast girl used to only seeing the sun rise over the water, it’s definitely something special!

Panama City Beach has it all: beaches, parks, shops, attractions, restaurants. The only downside to visiting in the off-season (particularly with the concern of COVID-19) is that not everything is open.

We experienced this when we tried to find a place to enjoy some ice cream. Yes, something as simple as finding ice cream in a beach town was a challenge! After weeding out a few closed-for-the-season shops, I found Pokee & Ice Rolls. It was owned by locals, highly rated, and fairly close, so we gave it a shot.

I’m so glad we did!

Pokee & Ice Rolls

This shop serves, you guessed it, pokee and ice rolls!

Pokee is a raw fish salad, but Pokee & Ice Rolls serves it in burritos, too. We didn’t have any pokee because we’d already eaten and were just looking for dessert. It was a bit of a disappointment after seeing all of the fresh veggies!

We got over it once we saw the ice rolls. Also called rolled ice cream, it is ice cream that is made on a cold metal mixing surface. It is cooled quickly with refrigerant. As the milk, cream, and sugar are mixed with ingredients of your choice, they freeze, turning into ice cream.

The ice cream is spread thin, then scraped up in long strokes. This causes it to curl into rolls. The ice cream rolls are picked up with tongs, tucked into a cup, and topped with your choice of syrups, toppings, and whipped cream.

You can watch the process here:

It’s easy to see why these treats are trendy. It’s fun to watch them being made and it’s fun to eat them!

Our Ice Rolls

Our order included 2 orders of rolls from their menu and 2 build-your-own orders.

The Morning Coffee is a blend of espresso and vanilla ice cream base. It’s topped with cocoa-dusted chocolate truffles, chocolate drizzle, and whipped cream. This was my choice and it was delicious! The coffee flavor was subtle and the sweet ice cream paired well with the dark chocolate on the truffles.

The Mango Magic is a vanilla ice cream base with mangoes that is topped with mango and drizzled with condensed milk and whipped cream. My daughter loved it! Mangoes are her favorite.

Our first build-your-own was made from a vanilla ice cream base with strawberry mix-ins and was topped with strawberry drizzle and gummi bears. My son was definitely a fan.

Our second build-your-own was made from a vanilla ice cream base and a pineapple mix-in. It was topped with mini mochi, a toasted marshmallow, and strawberry drizzle. I recommend ordering a marshmallow with any order of rolls just so you can see them break out the blow torch!

Overall, our experience was a great one. At just over $32.00 for 4 orders, this can’t be our regular ice cream shop. It’s certainly worth it every once in a while for the show that comes with the cup!
