Join the Knit for Food Knit-a-thon!

On Sunday, April 11, 2021, I’ll be taking part in the Knit for Food Knit-a-thon! Won’t you join me?

What is the Knit for Food Knit-a-thon?

The Knit for Food Knit-a-thon is a 12-hour knitting marathon designed to raise funds for and awareness of food insecurity in the United States. Knitters (plus crocheters and other stitchers and crafters) commit to 12 hours of knitting.

The funds raised for the Knit-a-thon will be split evenly between four charities:

  • Feeding America: By partnering with manufacturers, distributors, retailers, food service companies, and farmers, Feeding America rescues food before it goes to waste and redirects it where it is needed most. Their impact is over 6 billion meals and counting!
  • World Central Kitchen: WCK was established in 2010 to provide food resilience in the face of disaster. They partner with local groups to reduce the incidence of food borne illness in communities, largely through the conversion of clean cookstoves and installation of water lines. They also provide training on safe food handling.
  • No Kid Hungry: No Kid Hungry works with educators and lawmakers to ensure children have access to school meals. They’ve secured access for millions of meals (breakfast, lunch, after-school meals, and summer meals) and maintain a meal finder to help families find food distribution sites.
  • Meals on Wheels America: Meals on Wheels meets the nutritional needs of seniors with hand-delivered meals. These also help alleviate feelings of isolation and, when needed, can help address home safety hazards.

The Knit for Food Knit-a-thon was created by Laura Nelkin of Nelkin Designs.

The Knit for Food Knit-a-thon was partially inspired by a Gilmore Girls episode called “Knit, People, Knit” (season 7, episode 9). In the episode, the town of Stars Hollow holds a knit-a-thon to save the Old Muddy River Bridge. Though it aired several years ago, you can still find Gilmore Girls on Netflix.
