There’s Nothing Better Than Mom’s Apple Pie

For over 40 years, Mom’s Apple Pie Co. has been known for its delicious, homemade pies. I’d heard of the company and the reviews were excellent, but I always had somewhere else to be when passing one of these Virginia pie shops.

Luckily that all changed last week! I happened to be in Occoquan and the smell of baking pies pulled me right through the front door like a cartoon character being led by his nose.

The shop was smaller than I thought as most of the back is used for baking and prep. Stepping inside, I found a room of beer and wine and a rack of jams and jellies.

It was a bit of a relief to find that Mom’s pies are available whole or by the slice. Obviously I wanted to sample as many as possible, so I went for the slices. The full menu was extensive and I had a difficult time choosing. Eventually I settled on four pies that I thought most evenly represented what was offered in the shop.

What I Ordered at Mom’s Apple Pie Co.

I purchased four slices at $3.99 each. This gave me about half a pie for the same price as whole pies were being sold, but I had a variety to choose from. (Whole pies start at $14.99.)

I chose Apple Pie, Blackberry Crumb Pie, Wild Blueberry Pie, and Strawberry Rhubarb Pie.

Apple Pie

My first choice was a no-brainer. It’s the shop’s namesake, Apple Pie, with a traditional butter crust. This pie crust is perfect. It is buttery and flaky. It’s quite moist for a pie crust, but I still recommend keeping a cup of coffee or milk on hand.

The filling is also quite good! The layers of apple slices are so thick that there’s hardly any of the gravy-like goo typically found in apple pies. It is perfectly spiced with a tiny hint of tartness, perhaps due to the apples used. (Were they Granny Smith apples?)

Blackberry Crumb Pie

The Blackberry Crumb Pie had a crumb made of pecans and brown sugar. When I made my purchase, the cashier confirmed that I understood that crumb crusts contain pecans. It was also clearly marked on the label, paper receipt, and email receipt. I don’t have food allergies, but I appreciated the effort Mom’s Apple Pie Co. was making to ensure I understood what I was buying and what was in it.

The crust was crunchy and every now and again, I’d find a nice chunk of pecan. When I got the larger chunks, the flavor was noticeable, but beyond that it was all brown sugar sweetness. The filling was the right mix of tart and sweet and had generous chunks of berries. I thought this pie was the best of the four I chose and I wish I’d ordered at least one other pie with a crumble crust so I could truly compare.

Wild Blueberry Pie

The Wild Blueberry Pie had a butter crust, which I already knew would be delicious. I was surprised at the filling, which was incredibly sweet. It was filled with tiny wild blueberries, which likely led to the sweetness as well as its staining ability. My favorite thing about this pie is its full flavor.

Strawberry Rhubarb Pie

The Strawberry Rhubarb Pie was a classic pie with a butter crust. Again, the crust was classic. The smooth, sticky filling had chunks of berries and rhubarb. It was quite tart, but very good.

My Favorite Mom’s Pie

All in all, my favorite pie was the Blackberry Crumb pie. I really want to try the other pies with a crumb crust to get a fair comparison, though. All of them were delicious; I happily devoured each piece and my kids didn’t mind helping! They loved them all, too.

I think I’ll return before Thanksgiving and grab a couple whole pies for dessert. What kind should I get?
