The High Knob Lookout Tower is situated at the peak of Stone Mountain.
We visited this tower on a whim and I’m grateful that we did! The views are breathtaking. It was just the escape that we needed. I can see why it’s also called the High Knob Observation Tower.
The new tower boasts panoramic views of mountaintops in 5 states: Virginia, Tennessee, North Carolina, Kentucky, and West Virginia.
With an elevation of 4,200+ feet, you might expect that the tower is hard to access. The original tower may have been a bit of a challenge to climb, but a sidewalk slowly winds from the parking area. The grade is gradual, making the tower wheelchair accessible.
When we returned home, we used this Interpretive Guide to identify the key landmarks visible from High Knob Lookout Tower. (Visit the page and click “Get Started” to see them for yourself.)
While you’re here, check out nearby Flag Rock for more beautiful views and interesting rock formations.
