SO Original [Local Yarn Shop]

SO Original is a local yarn shop in Columbia, Maryland. I took a quick detour on my last trip to Jessup and I’m so glad I did! What began as a casual errand quickly turned into a memorable yarn shop experience, one that reminds me why I made a commitment to shop small when I can.

The shop has moved a couple of times over the last several years, and in its current home it feels easy to find and welcoming. Parking was also easy, which is always a plus.

From the moment I stepped inside, I was struck by how beautifully abundant the space felt. It was overflowing with color and texture, spilling from shelves and baskets in a way that invited exploration. It felt cozy and generous.

The owner, working on her own project, stopped to greet me with warm smiles and a real sense of happy engagement. It was clear I could browse at my own pace, but she was there if needed. It was a good balance. At one point, a well-intentioned husband wandered in trying to find the “right yarn” for his wife. The owner knew the pattern, helped him compare yarns, and gently guided him to the perfect choice. It was helpful without being overwhelming, and heartfelt in a way that made it clear she loves her craft.

I left with my own perfect choice, a few skeins of Queensland Adelaide in Goldenrod for my Rosita sweater. There was something about that shade that felt like it wanted to become part of my wardrobe, even though I don’t typically wear yellows or oranges. It was rich, warm, and almost optimistic, with spring coming so soon.

What makes SO Original truly stand out is that sense of knowledge and personal connection.

for knit-alongs, discussions about yarn choices, classes and gatherings (including virtual options!), and a real feeling that your next idea might find its spark right here.

I left with yarn in hand and a smile in my heart. Very few visits to a yarn shop just satisfy—most inspire, reassure, and invite return visits—and this was one of those rare afternoons where all three happened at once.

Whether you’re hunting for the perfect fiber for a sweater, the right needle size, the right buttons (which I forgot to buy!), or just a warm conversation with someone who gets it, SO Original is absolutely worth a stop.
