Purls of Wisdom [Local Yarn Shop]
Purls of Wisdom is a local yarn shop that absolutely hums with positive energy!

Purls of Wisdom
On a recent trip to the Philadelphia metro area, I made a detour specifically to visit Purls of Wisdom. I arrived about an hour before closing on a Saturday afternoon, expecting that end-of-day lull. Instead, I walked into a space that was absolutely bustling in the best possible way. It felt so full and alive!
From the moment I stepped inside, it was clear that this shop was a gathering place. It was full of knitters chatting, browsing, comparing skeins, and holding up yarns to compare them in the natural light.

The shop itself is beautiful. The shelves were lined with carefully arranged yarns in every weight and fiber. The layout was a bit winding, multiple routes through each room that encouraged slow wandering. There was more than enough space to move comfortably, even though the shop was busy.
What stood out most to me was how attentive and genuinely helpful the staff remained, even with the shop full. I asked if any yarn was from local dyers or spinners and a helpful employee showed me several sections of locally dyed and locally handspun yarns. She walked me through the shop with knowledge and enthusiasm and I didn’t feel rushed.

The Yarn
After circling the shop once (and then maybe once more), I left with 7 skeins of Laines du Nord Matera in Berry.
The color is a deep berry that feels part classic and part dramatic. It isn’t a color I normally wear, but it immediately felt right for my upcoming Nikita sweater by Lene Holme Samsøe. Matera has a beautiful structure and presence and I’m already imagining how the lacy stitch pattern will play against that depth of color.

On my drive back to the hotel, I considered why Purls of Wisdom felt special. It wasn’t just the inventory (though the selection is excellent); it was a combination of community, attentive staff, and overall positive energy.
If you’re searching for a local yarn shop in Pennsylvania with a wide selection and active community, this one deserves to be on your list!
